The Amai Quartet was founded at the end of 2020 and consists of four students and alumnae of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW): Murasaki Fukuda and Chiara Siciliano (violins), U Chon Wong (viola), and Anna Tonini-Bossi (cello).

Only a few months after its founding, the ensemble was already able to celebrate significant successes. In May 2021, following successful auditions, the quartet was accepted into the projects of Yehudi Menuhin – Live Music Now Vienna. In June 2021, the ensemble reached the finals of the Pakosky Competition in Piacenza and won 3rd prize. In October of the same year, the quartet won both 1st prize and the audience award at the first competition for young string quartets "Pietro Marzani" in Rovereto.

Following this success, the Amai Quartet was invited to renowned festivals and concert series both in Austria and abroad, including Classiche Forme, Fortissimissimo Firenze Festival, Kultursommer Wien, Lingotto Musica, Musica con le Ali, Musica con Vista – Comitato Amur, Pianodrom (Tirana), Settenovecento, l'Orangerie Sonore, and Trame Sonore.

The ensemble's artistic training began in March 2021 under the guidance of Prof. Peter Matzka (Vienna String Sextet, ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra), Prof. Florian Schötz (Goldmund Quartet), and Vida Vujic at the MDW. In the academic years 2021/2022 and 2023/2024, the quartet was selected for the chamber music course at the Stauffer Center for Strings in the class of the Quartetto di Cremona. Over the course of their musical development, the Amai Quartet had the opportunity to work with internationally renowned figures such as musicologist Clive Brown, Xiang Lu and Danfeng Shen (Simply Quartet), Mark Messenger (Royal College of Music), Henk Guittart (Schönberg Quartet), Pavel Nikl (Pavel Haas Quartet), and Günther Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet).

In addition, the quartet was invited to masterclasses with Alexander Pavlovsky (Jerusalem Quartet), Marcin Sieniawski (Szymanowski Quartet), and the Cuarteto Quiroga as part of the Zeister Muziekdagen 2022 festival (Netherlands), as well as with Oliver Wille (Kuss Quartet) at the International Concert Working Weeks Goslar 2024.

The Amai Quartet's repertoire is enriched by numerous collaborations with prominent artists, including mezzo-soprano Manuela Leonhartsberger (Volksoper Vienna), clarinetist Gianluigi Caldarola (Opéra Royal de Wallonie, Liège), pianist Wei-Yi Yang (Yale University), as well as contemporary composers such as Rainer Bischof and Michael Publig (Austria), Paolo Marzocchi (Italy), and Alexander Peçi (Albania).

In December 2021, the ensemble was admitted to the network Le Dimore del Quartetto. In August 2022, it participated in the Quartet Residency Program of the International Music Academy Orpheus in Vienna. In January 2023, it was selected for the project of the MERITA Platform, and in addition, the quartet develops special family concerts in collaboration with this European project.

In addition to the classical repertoire, the ensemble is dedicated to rediscovering forgotten works by female composers and developing new concert formats that appeal to a broad audience – including by combining classical music with other forms of expression such as theatre.

In 2025, the Amai Quartet’s debut album will be released on the Da Vinci Publishing label, dedicated exclusively to the music of Emilie Mayer.
